Requirements to teach kindergarten to grade 7
The BC Teachers’ Council (BCTC) sets the requirements for teaching at the elementary level (kindergarten to grade 7). In the Faculty of Education, these requirements apply to teacher education programs in various ways as outlined below.
English literature and composition requirement
6 credit/semester hours or equivalent of undergraduate English course work with a minimum of 3 credit/semester hours in literature.
This is a program admission requirement in the following:
- Post Baccalaureate Elementary
- Post Baccalaureate Secondary
- Dispersed Teacher Education B.Ed.
This is a program progression requirement to enter the following:
- Year 4 of the Bachelor of Education program

3 credit/semester hours or equivalent of undergraduate Canadian studies based course to indicate sufficient academic preparation to teach BC Social Studies Curriculum at the Elementary level.

This is a program progression requirement to enter the following:
- Year 4 of the Bachelor of Education program
