The Faculty of Education offers two Master of Education (M.Ed.) programs providing outstanding opportunities for professionals working in the field of education or in educational roles in the private sector. Both M.Ed. programs attract people from various professions involving teaching and learning, are not limited to teachers working in the K-12 education sector. Program Offerings
M.Ed. in Educational Leadership
Intakes offered for 2025 with applications opening October 1, 2024, include:
- Distance Option - part-time online cohort based option with short summer Nanaimo campus based residency components designed for those living at a distance from VIU
- Full Time Option - full-time face-to-face option designed for those wishing to study full time at the Nanaimo campus
- Weekend & Summer Option - part-time face-to-face option designed for full-time working professionals running on Friday evenings and Saturdays during the academic year with an intensive summer (July) component
Special program options:
- Weekend & Summer Option - potentially a Courtenay/Comox cohort for Fall 2025
- Montessori Educator Option - next planned intake July 2026
M.Ed. in Special Education
Intakes offered for 2025 with applications opening October 1, 2024, include:
- Part Time Option - part-time online cohort based option with short summer Nanaimo campus based residency components designed for those living at a distance from VIU
- Full Time Option - full-time face-to-face program designed for those wishing to study full time at the Nanaimo campus (not accepting applications for the Fall 2025 intake)
- Inclusive Education Graduate Diploma (IEGD) Laddering Option - part-time online cohort based option for graduates of the IEGD program
