Early Childhood Education Prior Learning Assessment program
If you have prior experience or training in early childhood education, you may qualify for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) to earn British Columbia Early Childhood Educator Registry credentials.
Who can apply for the ECEC PLA?
Any international or domestic student who has worked within the early learning and childcare sector in British Columbia for an extensive number of years may apply. This includes:
- Early Child Education Assistants (ECEAs)
- Early Childhood Educators (ECEs)
If you participate in this program, you may also have the opportunity to complete a VIU ECEC credential.
What is Prior Learning Assessment?
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) involves the evaluation of knowledge and skills an individual may have gained through informal education, training or experience. When you complete PLA successfully, VIU grants you academic credit.
Program content
You will complete VIU Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) courses through prior learning assessments.
After you complete all required courses, you will then be eligible to apply for your Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Certificate from the ECE Registry.
Course delivery
This ECEC PLA program will run until August 2026.
You will work one-on-one with VIU ECEC faculty through an assessment process.
International Students must:
- meet VIU's English Language Proficiency requirements for undergraduate programs have a valid study or work permit.
Notes on Admission
Domestic students interested in pursuing a VIU ECEC credential will need to demonstrate successful completion of BC High School English 12 with min. C grade (or equivalent)
