Faculty of Education Access Initiative
The Faculty of Education recognizes the importance of increasing the number of Indigenous teachers and advancing reconciliation through education.
Our Access Initiative creates more opportunities for Indigenous applicants to enter teacher education programs. If you self-identify as Indigenous, we encourage you to complete the Access Initiative option in the Applicant Profile when you apply.

The Access Initiative supports the goals of the 2025 Accord on Indigenous Education, which calls for stronger Indigenous representation in the K-12 teaching profession.

Education outcomes
Graduates of VIU’s Bachelor of Education programs will be able to:
- Create inclusive and engaging learning experiences that respond to the strengths, needs, identities and experiences of K–12 learners.
- Plan, teach, and assess effectively using knowledge of teaching and learning, curriculum, and assessment, and in line with the BC curriculum.
- Create flexible learning environments that support personalized learning and reflect the social, cultural, ecological and environmental contexts of learners.
- Include Indigenous perspectives, knowledge and ways of knowing in teaching and learning, including the First Peoples Principles of Learning.
- Use research and professional knowledge to make informed teaching decisions and improve learning.
- Build respectful relationships and work with others to support learners, families, colleagues, schools and communities.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical practice that reflects the Professional Standards for BC Educators.
- Reflect on and develop their teaching practice by examining their beliefs and assumptions and using feedback, inquiry and experience to support ongoing learning.
Graduates of our programs are granted a Bachelor of Education degree and are recommended to the Ministry of Education and Child Care Teacher Regulation Branch for a professional Certificate of Qualification.
