Greetings and welcome to the Spring 2012 Convocation issue of our AlumniED newsletter. The newsletter serves to keep our Alumni and teaching colleagues up to date with the good work of faculty, students and staff here in the Faculty of Education.

Convocation offers an opportunity to reflect on our students' successes over another academic year and to congratulate our deserved graduates.

Spring Convocation celebrates the success of our Post Baccalaureate program graduates. 91 enthusiastic grads are eager to begin their teaching careers after 18 months in our program.

This term, 19 school districts and 131 schools supported our student teachers on practica. Education students were placed in 5 First Nations schools and 4 International schools (Central America, China, South Korea and Thailand) welcomed several students interested in international opportunities. Thanks to all our sponsor teachers, faculty supervisors and elementary and secondary students who collectively help our student teachers achieve their career and personal goals.

This year we are pleased to offer two new Graduate Diploma programs in addition to our current Masters in Education(Leadership) and Masters in Special Education programs. Our programs offer AlumniED partners the opportunity to continue their persuit of life-long learning opportunities.

Our Education Program grads continue to support student success in our schools locally, nationally and internationally. Congratulations to all our graduates-- past and present.

Dr. Harry Janzen, Dean, Faculty of Education

Education graduate and graduating class valedictorian, Evelyne St-Arnaud, is congratulated by Chancellor Shawn Atleo (left) and President Ralph Nilson at VIU’s recent Convocation ceremony. St-Arnaud now works as a French Immersion teacher at Hammond Bay Elementary in Nanaimo.

February 9th was the date for our Spring Convocation ceremony, held twice yearly at Nanaimo's Port Theatre. This semester's celebration was just that as administration, faculty, family and friends gathered to share in our students' successes.

Our Featured Graduate: Jennifer Potosky (Grad 2006)

Jennifer is currently a new Mom and a busy teacher at Derek Taylor Public School in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She is also the 2008 recipient of the Alberta School District Association's Edwin Parr Award for most promising first year teacher. Well done Jennifer!

"My choice to attend VIU was one of the best decisions in my life. While attending the university I met some lifelong friends, amazing professors, and learned a lot. VIU supported my healthy lifestyle by offering a fully equipped gym, bike lockers for the times my best friend and I rode our bikes to school, and both on and off campus recreational activities. I found that the professors really took the time to build connections with students and made the extra effort to give students educational experiences that they will never forget. Having the opportunity to visit Hornby Island’s Leadership Training Camp as part of my Physical Education degree is an example of how professors go above and beyond to ensure quality education for students.

A memory that often surfaces is that of myself cushioned into a library chair, textbook on lap, admiring the beautiful landscape and ocean views laid before me though the upper library windows. VIU has left me with vast knowledge and prepared me professionally for my teaching career."

Faculty of Education Announces Two New Graduate Diploma Programs

VIU’s Graduate Diploma in Online Learning and Teaching (OL&T) Welcomes You!

Distance learning is one of BC’s educational growth areas and teachers with expertise in this rewarding area are in popular demand. The program was designed in cooperation with professionals and school district distance learning principals to meet the needs of today’s 21st Century online learners.

Through digital immersion in a variety of environments, graduates will explore theory and its practical applications based on research, as well as current and emergent practices.

The OL&T Program engages a cohort model and meets industry and school district needs for knowledgeable and skilled distance educators focused on engagement, achievement and student success.

Global Education Graduate Diploma (GEGD)

Since the inception of VIU’s Education programs, many of you have expressed a keen desire to further your understanding and practice of Global Education, in Canada and abroad.  We have been inspired by your enthusiasm and faculty members[Katherine Pepper, Carolyn Bowles, Nadine Cruickshanks, and Kelly Quinlan (UNICEF Canada)]are very excited and pleased to announce a new program for certified teachers entitled Global Education Graduate Diploma (GEGD), commencing Fall, 2012.

The Global Education Graduate Diploma (GEGD) is designed to provide teachers with a broad field of study that explores the urgent need for global education in schools. Through a critical study of world events and circumstances, teachers will learn to weave diverse perspectives into their practice and foster a sense of citizenship and recognition of the world’s diversity among their students. Participants will examine a culturally rich and interconnected world, including the significant interrelatedness of the natural world. Students will create and implement best practices for incorporating global education into the K-12 curriculum. The content includes the cultivation of three strands: local and global awareness; transformational understanding; and responsible, active citizenship.
