AlumniED Newsletter -Spring 2019 Convocation Issue

Dean's Message from Dr. David Paterson

Dean PattersonWelcome to the Spring 2019 edition of our Convocation newsletter.

Graduation is an exciting part of each student's life on campus. The Convocation ceremony offers a mixture of academic traditions and modern celebration. In addition to distributing parchments to graduates, the University also grants honourary credentials and recognizes the efforts and achievements of graduates and faculty members.

Fall 2018 marked the last semester for 94 Bachelor of Education Post-Baccalaureate students who are now equipped with the knowledge and practical experience to start their own teaching careers.

A remarkable 135 sponsor teachers from 66 schools in 19 districts hosted our students, for which they, and we, are so grateful – thank you so much! We had 20 students placed in 19 schools in 13 out of area school districts as well. These numbers paint a picture of just how many people are involved, and how far our students are willing to venture to complete their educational training.

Along with our Bachelor of Education undergraduates, 14 graduate diploma and 58 Masters degree students have also achieved their post-graduate educational goals. Our graduate programs offer our AlumniED partners the opportunity for continuous, lifelong learning – something that is so important to model in today’s classrooms.

I am delighted to congratulate this graduating class on reaching this major accomplishment and to thank all those who helped them along the way.

Please join me in sharing the warmest congratulations to our newest cohort of Bachelor of Education program graduates. We are so happy for your success, and as Alumni, want to welcome you as a full member to the AlumniED community.

Best wishes as you pursue your next set of educational dreams as life-long learners..

February 1, 2019 -- Spring Convocation Celebrations

Convocation is a time of celebration. Convocation offers a chance for our students to get together with their classmates, family, friends, and faculty to celebrate their accomplishments. In addition to celebrating the achievements of our graduates at the ceremony, Vancouver Island University often grants honorary degrees and awards. A reception celebrating the achievement of our graduates is held after each convocation ceremony

During the February 1st ceremony, an Honorary Doctor of Letters was awarded to Professor Kim Samuel. Ms. Samuel is a pioneer in the field of social connectedness and its significance to inclusive policy and program development on a global scale. She advocates for community-based approaches to economic and social development. Her work focusing on social isolation as a critical experiential and measurable component of multi-dimensional poverty and other critical issues underscores the importance of social connectedness to human dignity and human rights struggles globally.

The iconic mace was carried by retiring Dean of International Education, Graham Pike. Dr. Pike’s passion for enhancing global understanding and social justice through public education is evident from his over 35 years’ experience in international education. His leadership, scholarship and innovation have been recognized across Canada and internationally.

A passionate Valedictory speech was delivered by graduating Bachelor of Education student Kaily Baldwin. Highlights of Kaily's time at VIU include meeting peers and faculty members she felt she could be her authentic self around, and travelling to India for an international practicum experience. She is now teaching a Kindergarten/Grade 1 class in Ucluelet, BC.

Chancellor Mandell Speaks to Recent Graduates

Louise Mandell

Once again, VIU's Chancellor, Louise Mandell, spoke eloquently to program gradates in her Convocation address. She reminded graduates to "Model living a balanced life, so you can skillfully help others. Indigenous laws remind us of the ways we can live in balance with each other and all living things. Well-being means to live in balance with ourselves. Take care of your body as well as your mind and heart. Be kind and gentle with yourself as well as with others. The Dalai Lama famously said, “My religion is simple. My religion is kindness.”Kindness is so radical that it defines this great leader's entire spirituality. Your degree is a gorgeous invitation to gratitude. There is no greater gift than to be grateful for our lives. Gratitude leads to generosity, because we want to share this gift with others."
