AlumniED Newsletter -Spring 2018 Convocation Issue

Dean's Message from Dr. David Paterson

Dr. David PattersonWelcome to the latest edition of our Convocation newsletter.

Let me begin by sharing the warmest congratulations to our newest cohort of Bachelor of Education program graduates. We are so happy for your success, and as Alumni, want to welcome you as a full member to the AlumniED community.

The AlumniED Convocation newsletter is published twice annually by the Vancouver Island University Faculty of Education. We like to take this opportunity to reflect our students’ successes and recognize the great set of inspirational people we have entering the teaching field.

Fall 2017 marked the last semester of Bachelor of Education studies for 93 students, who are now equipped with the knowledge and practical experience to start their own teaching careers.

A remarkable 133 sponsor teachers from 62 schools in 21 districts hosted our students, for which they and we are so grateful – thank you so much. We had 21 students placed in 15 out-of-area school districts as well. These numbers paint a picture of just how many people are involved, and how far our students are willing to venture to complete their educational training.

Along with our Bachelor of Education undergraduates, 20 graduate diplomas and 35 degree programs students have also achieved their educational goals. Our graduate programs offer our AlumniED partners the opportunity for continuous, lifelong learning – something that is so important to model in today’s classrooms.

I am delighted to congratulate this new class on reaching this major accomplishment and to thank all those who helped them along the way. This chapter of your educational journey culminates as you cross the Convocation stage.  Best wishes as you pursue your next set of educational dreams.

Welcome Message from Our (New) Dean, Dr. David Paterson

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the VIU Faculty of Education I am delighted to welcome you to our dynamic AlumniED learning community. As program graduates, you appreciate that we proudly maintain high standards and high expectations of our students, our graduates and of ourselves. This is recognized by BC school districts who are eager to hire our graduates. We also enjoy the support of experienced teachers and program graduates, such as yourself, returning to VIU to continue their graduate studies.

Our work is guided by belief in challenging pedagogy, learner-centered teaching, reflective practice, collaboration, and the scholarly integration of theory with teaching and learning. Please review the Faculty of Education's Vision Statement as it describes in more detail our goals for the program.

It is my great pleasure to engage our next generation of teachers students and teachers as we prepare together for the joyous life of teaching.

Convocation recognizes the culmination of an academic journey and is celebrated twice yearly here in Nanaimo's Port Theatre. Surrounded by friends, family and their faculty classmates and professors; students in regalia crossed the stage at Nanaimo's Port Place theatre on February 2.

During the ceremony an Honorary Doctorate of Laws was awarded to Dr. Jennifer Anne Wade for her lifelong committment to social justice issues.Dr. Wade has devoted her life to the defence of human rights, with a focus on advocating for prisoners of conscience, children in care, refugees and immigrants. A spokesperson for those who cannot advocate for themselves, She is a pioneer of many movements in Canada recognizing and helping oppressed people.

The iconic mace was carried by recently retired Education faculty member Dr. Bernie Krynowsky

Chancellor Mandell Speaks to Recent Graduates

Chancellor MandellOnce again, VIU's Chancellor, Louise Mandell, spoke eloquently to program gradates in her Convocation address. The Chancellor is the titular head of the University, presiding over Convocation ceremonies, conferring degrees and providing advice to the President.

"Transformation is about learning and unlearning – changing society, by thinking and doing things differently. Listening means doing – it carries the necessary action within it. As you act, you join a larger force for change and innovation. In an immensely heartening project of collective goodwill, the Mastercard Foundation and the Rideau Hall Foundation chose VIU to donate $13.5 million in new funding for a learning partnership for Indigenous youth — breaking down barriers, changing a generation.

Make your education a personal call to action. Stand your power; speak your truth. Thank you all, for your beautiful contributions to VIU and for the work you still have to do — remaking the world for those who will follow you." (Excepted from the February 2, 2018 Convocation Address)
